A. Rex: News

Ong Bak: The Thai Warrior - May 18, 2008

Ong Bak is the kind of movie you don't see with people sensitive to extreme violence. There are about 15 different scenes and cuts in the movie with twelve of those scenes chock-full of head smashing violence. Also, every memorable punch/kick replays at least twice in slow motion so the viewer can fully appreciate the blow.

The first scene in the movie is the best. It starts out with a camera panning over a beautiful field and forest, before finally fixing on a tree. Within seconds about twenty Thai males charge the tree and frantically try to climb it. In competition, they kick, punch, and throw each other from the tree, sometimes from as high as twenty to thirty feet. Why are they doing this? Well, the movie never explains that, but you forget pretty quickly as the movie kicks into violence overdrive.

It might be the greatest martial arts film ever made. I am not exaggerating! The only thing bad about this movie is that it didn't last forever.

Hot hand - April 26, 2008

Today I played Basketball. I always play Basketball right before NBA playoffs. I get all excited and wanna pretend I'm Kobe Bryant or Shaq. Unfortunately for my friends though, I have a pretty reliable "hot hand" when I play Basketball. Basically, a "hot hand" means you keep making shots endlessly. 3 pointer? No problem. Layup? Moneeeeey! Everyone kept trying to throw me off. They kept yelling things like, "Clipspringer" (some small mammal in South America or something) or just general obscenities. No effect! Nothing but net all night.

Major change - April 5, 2008

A. Rex is no longer Andrew Espinola and Andrew Jones. It is now just Andrew Espinola.

A. Rex will continue though. The new record is still set to come out in May and plans are still to assemble a band and tour on it.

Andrew Jones has been a great friend, drummer, and band partner. I will miss him terribly. We still might play shows together but I’m not sure when that will be (hopefully soon!!!).

Things ended well, but it still feels like a major loss. We split for different reasons, but a lot of it I take responsibility for. Apparently, (many people have told me this) I’m impossible to work with, controlling, selfish, and a bit of a jerk sometimes. I tried my best not to be and I think Andrew Jones knows and appreciates that. In the end though, I couldn’t give him what he wanted. For that, I am truly sorry.

Dating is aging me - April 5, 2008

There have been many points in my life when I’ve thought, "This is it. I’ve finally grown up. I’m an adult." Well, the fact is I haven’t. I still agonize over the same "Should I call her? Will she call me?" crap that I only imagine high school freshmen dealing with. For me it’s just stressful. It’s aging me! Look at me. I’m 22 and I almost look 17 (Yes! I look young).

I guess I go through cycles. Sometimes I can handle the dating stuff and sometimes it just seems ridiculous, especially when it doesn’t work out. I HATE getting to the third date and realizing the only thing I have in common with this person is that we both breathe air. In case you’re wondering, (you’re not) this is one of those times when I can’t handle it. It’s ok though. That’s why god invented Netflix.

New EP in May!!! - March 17, 2008

We're excited about this one. The title is tentatively set as "Who said I was running?" You'll find out why when you listen to it. It's gonna be 6 tracks and there won't be a dinosaur on the cover. Also, the songs are literally twice as fast and twice as awesome as anything we've ever done.

A day at the museum - March 3, 2008

My museum trips are infamous. The most famous incident was with my uncle when I was 13. I walked through the New York - Guggenheim in 15 minutes with this "bored, uninterested look on my face" as my uncle describes it. People never take me to museums twice.

Yesterday was different though. I went with a date to the Witte museum in San Antonio to see the REAL bodies exhibit. I was anxious (it's still a museum!) but I managed to stay long enough to enjoy the entire thing. I highly recommend it to all people interested in dead bodies.

Back in the studio - February 16, 2008

We're back in the studio working on a new ep. We should be done with it in the next month or so. It's about twice as fast and twice as awesome as the stuff we have on myspace. People always say that about their new stuff but we really mean it!

The MOST predictable movie of all time - January 30, 2008

I like awful things. I enjoy an awful meal, an awful movie, or even an awful book every once in a while. Hell, I enjoy Walker: Texas Ranger every now and again. I never know when they're gonna show it though. It always gets the worst time slot.

Anyways, what I don't like is predictability. I mean, if you know what's gonna happen then what's the point? I went out and saw the film "Untraceable" today. It was dreadful. Pleaseeee don't see it!!! The characters are so bad you wonder if they're made out of cardboard. Within five minutes you know exactly who's gonna live and die and under what circumstances. Also, how old is Diane Lane? She looks 90.

My team lost - January 13, 2008

I can't believe THE Dallas Cowboys lost to the Giants. Is there no justice in the world? Why must football (the one pure and violent thing I can count on) be a disappointment? Oh well, I guess my broken heart will eventually mend. Until then, I'll have to take comfort in other less interesting sporting events.

I’m worried about the lizard - January 8, 2008

My brother went out of town with his wife a few days ago. While he's away, I'm responsible for the care and safety of his pet lizard. I've been nervously calling my brother twice a day seeking advice on the lizard. "He's just sitting there Dave. Is that normal? Should I spray him with water or something?"

Today, I went out and bought the lizard some worms. If you're wondering why I keep referring to him as the lizard, it's because my brother never assigned him a name. Anyways, I fed him five worms and decided that was enough.

I think he's a Springsteen fan too. I put on Born in the USA today and he started dancing around his terrarium.

Check back later for more updates on the lizard : )

New Myspace Page - November 16, 2007

I'm not sure what happened with our last one. We couldn't add shows to the page and the music player stopped working. Then poof! Tom swooped in and deleted our page. My guess is it was some kind of error on the page.

ORRRRR maybe it was because we used the word fuck in a song. I thought we did it tastefully. Perhaps, Tom thought differently.

Anyways, it's back at the old address. myspace.com/arextheband

Taking a break - November 14, 2007

We've decided to pretty much take December and January off. Our guitarist quit so it's just the two of us again. Grrrr. Does everyone in this world have to be so unreliable?

Anyways, I just got the first season of Six Feet Under on DVD. I think this show was popular like 5 years ago. Oh well, I'm always a little late catching on to things.

I love football!!! - October 3, 2007

It's wonderful. I spend Saturday, Sunday, and Monday night drinking beer and watching football. The Saturday college games wet my appetite while the Sunday and Monday pro games fully satiate my need for aggressive sports.

This affinity for football has never been understood by my peers though. Friends wonder why I blow them off for boring yet potentially informative half-time reports and family members wonder why I never answer the phone on weekend afternoons. Always profiled as more of a computer programmer than sports fan, I've had trouble changing this perception of me. I mean, I know I'm too skinny to play football but why can't I like it? As a kid I ruled at two-hand touch.

Personal Update - July 19, 2007

So, I'm thinking of changing deodorant. It turns out my friend uses the same brand and scent. I just don't think I'm comfortable smelling the same as someone else.

Ohhhhhh! I bought the new Ryan Adams album. It's the best album ever. I know you kids don't pay for albums anymore, but you should really consider spending some money on this one. It has more than one good song on it! I know, it was weird when I found out too.

I've been playing Yahoo chess again lately. I love beating up on people who don't know what the heck they're doing. The whole time I'm sending them messages like, "you suck", "why do you even continue living?" etc.

Has anyone heard of Bill Miller BBQ? It's this rocking BBQ chain that has the cheapest prices around. I get a whole plate of food with a large sweet tea for only $4.29. Who are these guys? While everyone else raises their prices, Bill Miller seems to be ignoring inflation. So, eat there! If we keep sales high maybe they'll continue to ignore smart price increases

New Album!!! - May 21, 2007

Check it out!!!

I found my double - April 22, 2007

Go see the movie Disturbia! The lead guy in it looks just like me. I'd rather be a famous musician, but I'll settle for mistaken celebrity if I have to. Anyways, it totally freaked out my brother. I wanna meet the guy. I just wanna look at him and point like, "Don't I know you?" For those of you who haven't heard of Disturbia, it's like Rear Window for Generation Y.

I hate haircuts - April 21, 2007

i'm freakin out right now.....i need to get a haircut but i'm not sure i'm up for it......they NEVER do what i tell them......i'm like, "cut it short, but not too short." they always cut it too short......effin a!!! maybe i should just pay $80 for a haircut like my brother......he goes to some guy named Walter who does a fantastic job.....

Mixing Session - April 11, 2007

Tomorrow and Friday we're mixing the record. "Moving Backwards" is almost done!!! The pressure is definitely on. I've been promising people the best pop record in the past 5 years.
